Martha Kanter from the Department of Education shared this YouTube clip at the kick off:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Martha Kanter, Big Ideas Fest 2010\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vOmkYWKv3mA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of things highlighted at the Fest were <a href=\"http:\/\/sifteo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Siftables<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;cookie-sized computers with motion sensing, neighbor detection, graphical display, and wireless communication.&#8221; Very cool &#8211; here&#8217;s a TED talk on them:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"David Merrill: Toy tiles that talk to each other\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JP0w9lZoLwU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I got to the Siftables stuff from the <a href=\"http:\/\/mindshift.kqed.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">MindShift site<\/a> powered by KQED; there&#8217;s much other good stuff there. For example <a href=\"http:\/\/mindshift.kqed.org\/2010\/12\/trust-children-with-information-and-watch-the-world-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">the post about Dr. Sugata Mitra<\/a> and his belief that we need to give kids the benefit of the doubt when it comes to handling what&#8217;s perceived as adult-only information. Allow children to self-learn and let parents and educators be guides rather than sources of info. Certainly, there&#8217;s no going back, with the internet genie out of the bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, I had not heard of this place before but like many of the reports there &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/nepc.colorado.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Education Policy Center<\/a> at the University of Colorado.
